Thursday January 12, 2006 Communities of Practice .

Thursday December 8, 2005: Free Breakfast!  As a thank you to those who organized and participated in our KM conference this year, we have enough cash in our KM Network fund left over to pay for breakfast for this meeting. As with everything in life... there is a catch... participants worked for their food...  Each person prepared a one page/one slide summary of the key KM issues they are dealing with and/or key questions they have. Each person spoke to their slide for 5 minutes.

September 15, 2005: Gerard Vaillancourt has led Alberta Agriculture's website development since its start in 1995. In 2002, Alberta Agriculture developed and launched its own web content management system. Alberta Agriculture's efforts around managing web documents, work flow, taxonomy and metadata are useful signposts for information managers looking at new web content management software and processes. Since Agriculture's website management was the genesis of Agriculture's journey into knowledge management, KM infused web content management is our topic.

June 2, 2005: Dr. Kirby Wright recently completed a study with Alberta Agriculture Food & Rural Development (AAFRD) and although the results have not been officially released, Neil MacAlpine, with AAFRD, is willing to talk generally about the survey and case study process. Dr. Kirby Wright is willing to give a shortened version of an Innovation Capacity presentation (some of the slides he used for Alberta Agriculture Food & Rural Development) and can talk specifically about how innovation and KM are linked.

May 5, 2005: We debriefed our KM Conference 2005. We discussed the key things we heard, tidied up loose ends, and conducted an after action review on running the conference (what worked, what didn't work, what we need to do differently next time). What are our next steps? Should we consider conference calling with the Calgary KM network (and with Gartner group for that matter - since French Caldwell suggested it)?

April 7, 2005: Conference planning.

March 10, 2005:  Conference planning.  Neil shared a few resources: Dave Pollard, ex-CKO of a big 4 accounting firm in Canada, had an interesting summary of KM challenges on his blog last year (Pollard's Principles of KMand "The Cost of not Knowing and Where KM is Going".

February 10, 2005: Sandra Bell from the Alberta Kidney Foundation posed an interesting question regarding the relationship between knowledge management and volunteer organizations.

January 13, 2005: Theme: KM Conference planning and reflecting on what we would like to do in the coming year. Kirby Wright updated us on what he has heard from potential keynote speakers. The members will offer their ideas on what are issues they need to learn about in the coming year.

December 9, 2004: Kunal Kaliandasani (an Engineering Co-op student who has been doing some original work around expertise location and knowledge centres) and Sharron Martens with EPCOR Water Services presented at our December 9th meeting on EPCOR's OnLine Manuals "Helping You Cope with Information Overload and Training". They also showcased some training software. The attached document in the sidebar describes the purpose of the online manuals and was a handout at the meeting.

Nov. 4, 2004 Social Network Analysis: Dave McGarva, Acton Consulting, talked about networks in organizations and a new tool for network analysis he is working on. If you have been following the discussions in the KM community about complex work, social networks in organizations and network analysis, Dave's presentation was an opportunity for us to get our teeth into an emerging area of knowledge management.

Oct. 7, 2004 Before and After Action Reviews: Greg Alcorn, BSc, MA, and Inspector, Communications, with the Edmonton Police Service presented on the Edmonton Police Services "Before and After Action Review" process. For those who could not attend our KM Network meeting, key points and Greg's presentation is posted on the sidebar. Greg's presentation gave us  insights into where the EPS currently is as an organization and how they approach lessons learned.
